Paws for Patrick: Building a Better Future through Animals!

The Human-Animal Bond

It’s a tale as old as time, the human-animal bond. From ancient times to the modern era, humans and animals have shared a connection that has shaped cultures, enriched lives, and taught us lessons about compassion, empathy, and companionship. Paws For Patrick believes deeply in this connection and the benefits of animals towards mental health.

Improving the Mental Health of Young People

Paws For Patrick is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the mental health of young people through the Emotional Support of Animals. Created in memory of Patrick Roemer, a dedicated animal lover who died by suicide in 2020, Paws For Patrick has touched hundreds of lives in over 43 states in just 3 years.

Mental Health and Animals

Roughly 5 million young people struggle with mental illness in the United States (CDC 2022). There are several ways mental illness is treated and every person is different, Paws for Patrick takes pride in their animals and the many benefits an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) can provide to someone struggling.

Benefits of the Human-Animal Connection

Several studies have shown the benefits of the human-animal connection. Owning an animal improves heart health, alleviates depression, anxiety, and loneliness, promotes well-being, supports child development, and contributes to healthy aging (HABRI). For Patrick Roemer and countless others facing mental health challenges, an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) serves as more than just a companion animal; it becomes a therapeutic ally embodying the purest form of healing: unconditional, innocent love.

The Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Process

Paws For Patrick streamlines the Emotional Support Animal (ESA) process, providing seekers with therapists who assess their eligibility for an ESA letter and dedicated Wish Granters who offer guidance and support. Paws for Patrick goes beyond ESA letters, offering financial assistance, guidance in finding an ESA, dog training, and supplies, all free of charge. While their work cannot bring Patrick back or erase the pain of his loss, it serves as a testament to his memory and legacy.

What’s Next?

Paws For Patrick is committed to upholding its mission, ensuring no one is turned away due to a lack of resources. Dedicated to broadening its impact, the organization actively seeks partnerships and additional resources to ensure that animal companionship remains accessible to those in need, working towards a future where mental well-being is within reach for all.
